TRANSTYX
ART PROJECT BY ZANOOBYA & EL TEATRO
P R E S E N T A T I O N
TranStyX is an art project initiated by “Zanoobya association to serve sustainable development via art and creativity” and devised by Tunisian queer artist Moncef Zahrouni.
The project comprises a play an art installation, a book including the play text in addition to interviews with Tunisian trans community members and eventually a 2-day event that includes workshops around trans citizens’ right to dignity and freedom of gender expression. A symposium will follow to explore the history of transidentity in the Islamic literature.
The project TranStyX’s ultimate goal is to shed lights on the tribulations Tunisian trans people are facing while the country is struggling to succeed in its post-revolution democratic transition and to ultimately empower the community to speak up and fight for its rights.
S Y N O P S I S
Trans-:
(1) Prefix. Across; beyond; on or to the other side of.
(2) Referring or relating to people whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex.
Styx:
Greek Mythology. One of the nine rivers in the underworld, over which Charon ferried the souls of the dead.
Where does the Styx drain? Is it possible to row against its current to reach The Elysian Fields ? Should the life of a trans be a tragic egodyssey predestined to be swept away by the Styx tide?
